Early Life
On February 13, 1947, Mike Krzyzewski was born in Chicago, Illinois. Mike’s Polish-American parents, William and Emily Krzyzewski, raised him as a Catholic. Krzyzewski earned his diploma from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, in 1969. In his final season, under the famed coaching of Bob Knight, he served as the team’s captain for the Army basketball squad.
From 1969 until 1974, Krzyzewski served in the American Army, reaching the rank of captain before being discharged. During the 1974–1975 season, Mike began his coaching career as an assistant with Bob Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers. Krzyzewski coached the Army Cadets for five years before being hired by West Point the following season.
Career
Due to his exceptional high school play, Coach Bob Knight recruited him for the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he eventually rose to the position of basketball team captain. He served in the American Army from 1969 to 1974 after receiving his degree.
During his two years of military service, he oversaw the service teams at the U.S. Military Academy Prep School in Belvoir, Virginia. After leaving the military in 1974 with the rank of Captain, Krzyzewski worked as a graduate assistant for Bob Knight, his former Army coach, at Indiana University. The following year, he was West Point’s head coach.
In 1980, Mike Krzyzewski was chosen to lead Duke University’s athletic programme.
